Ohhhh, I’m so excited to finally post this! Keep secrets is not exactly one of my strong points š
Ladies and Gentlemen (… are you there??), may I introduce the Miette Wrap Skirt:
Our now-famous Tilly has released a new downloadable pattern – the Miette! Miette is a gently flared wraparound skirt that ties at the front in a delightful bow. The skirt has a wide back overlap (no danger of flashing!) and optional practical patch pockets. Guys, this is the perfect beginner pattern – wrap around ties (no fiddly closures!), simple to fit, and it’s actually cute and wearable… not to mention highly customizable. Can’t you see this with a contrasting waist tie, or even some embroidery or applique on the front pocket? Another bonus is that the simple shape works with a variety of fabrics – even the scary ones, like silk or plaid – and since there are only a few pieces, it’s a great pattern for testing the waters without a huge commitment. I love it!
I also love that it’s a non-flashing wrap skirt. I took these pictures on a windy day, wore it out on a windy day – even stood on the street corner and waited 15 minutes for my ride to pick me up – and things stayed exactly where they belonged. I haven’t had a chance to fully test this theory, but I very strongly suspect that this skirt will also work well for cycling.
In addition to being a simple skirt design, the instructions are also super easy for even the most amateur of beginners to comprehend – think full, in-depth tutorial, with scads of color pictures and lots of words to guide you along (there is also a set of basic instructions for those of us who don’t need quite so much hand-holding ;)). Consider it a sewing lesson with a bonus pattern!
I cut my pattern in a size 2, omitted the pocket (otherwise it would’ve gotten lost in the sea of dots) and shortened the length by about 4″. The fit turned out perfect; I couldn’t be happier!
Isn’t my fabric gorgeous!? It’s a lovely medium-weight linen by Marc Jacobs… from Mood, of course š I actually chased the bolt around the store, which made me spend an extra long time cutting and thus made me late for the round-up at the end of our first shopping segment during my NY meet-up. Totally worth it, though – this stuff was a dream to sew, to wear, to just look at. And it goes with half the tops in my wardrobe! YUS.
Psst! It comes in other colorways as well… I have an entire fistful of swatches to prove it. Who wants to be twinsies with me?!
As you can see, here is an entirely different set of pictures. I didn’t like the way my first batch turned out! I was also super eager to try pairing this skirt up with a mint top, after seeing my homegirl Kaelah’s mint+navy outfit and being jealous of her color-matching skillz. This is my Pavlova Wrap top.
Since this is a wrap skirt paired with a wrap top, I will be calling this outfit the Wrapper’s Delight. Go ahead, groan.
Speaking of groaning, I know I shouldn’t be wearing black tights with this outfit. I promise I didn’t go out in public like this. Just ignore them, please and thanks.
I love my new skirt and I can’t wait to find new combinations to wear it with (as dorky as that sounds!). I also can’t wait to see all the different versions that are sure to start popping up – judging from the maker’s gallery, I think we’re all in for a treat š
Want one for yourself? GET IT GET IT (you know you want it!!). And thank you, Tilly, for letting me be a pattern tester!
You’re totally going to wear your Miette Skirt with your Miette Cardigan, right??
I love the polka dots, like whoa. And I guess I don’t know the rules for wearing tights. When are you not supposed to wear black tights…?
I don’t like pairing black with navy, I think the outfit would look better with grey tights (or… NO TIGHTS. C’mon, warm weather!!). And you totally got me on the Miette cardigan. That will be my, uhm, Miette Inception outfit hahahahaha
I was just going to say that about the Miette cardigan! š
It’s a total winner of a pattern isn’t it?! I love your version Lauren, I’m just wondering how long I can possibly last until I crack and make myself a navy polka dot version! x
Not too long, I hope – we need more matching outfits, yes? š
Congratulation to Tilly! I know you wrote about all the details but I can’t get over the fabric and its print – polka dots! Marc Jacobs! Color me jealous, Lauren!
Love polka dots. Very cute skirt.
Oh and there is nothing wrong with wear those black tights. Now if only you had mint shoes.
LOVE THIS!!! Your polka dot version is so cute, and I’m lovin’ the Wrappers Delight combo. Can’t wait to get home and buy/download this. I just bought Mathilde the other day as well, and Tilly’s Great British Sewing Bee appearances start tomorrow, so this is officially Tilly Week.
It’s so cool that you’re making stuff out of your Mood haul already. Sweet.
And P.S., the black tights look fine!
Tilly Week – yeah, I like that!
Super cute! I love everything about this version: the polka-dots, the lace hem tape, and the flattering fit. I saw you as a tester this morning and was dying to see your whole post! If this doesn’t make people want to buy the pattern, I don’t know what will! Great job š
I just commented over at Handmade Jane’s that her yellow Miette skirt is really cute, but yours is equally cute!! You can never go wrong with polka dots!! Am I right?! Just wish I had more polka dot fabric to play around with….:(
Love it! What an awesome skirt – and a wrap skirt at that, gotta have it. I wish you hadn’t mentioned Mood has all those linens – looking over the linen and all those gorgeous colors….
It looks awesome with your wrap top! HA Wrapper’s Delight.
Just lovely š really really cute. I may need more polka dots in my life!
Jo š
Dear God, could you look any cuter? I’ve been banning myself from buying more patterns but I know I’m going to have to have this skirt. I already have the Pavlova pattern and I think this is a perfect combination whilst my rather unstable weight sorts itself out! No big fitting issues…and flexibility of waistlines…all the time looking stylish. What’s not to love?
Really cute! The pattern is fun AND wearable and the fabric is amazing! I’d have followed it all over Mood, too š
My weight fluctuates too and I can vouch that wraps are GREAT for that kind of thing – cinch it in when you’re having a skinny morning, let it out after a few beers š Ha!
Wrapper’s Delight…heheh…love it! This is such a gorgeous skirt Lauren, the polka dots are adorable and the combination with your mint top is genius! I may even give it a try myself even though skirts don’t suit my muffin tops. This being a wrap around though, it may actually work and I’m sooo willing to try!!!
You say that, but I recall a certain self-drafted skirt that blew all of our collective minds at the same time. Do it! I think this style would look amazing on you!
Lauren, I love it! So cool with your gorgeous mint Pavlova too. Thanks for being such an awesome tester, your feedback was so valuable xx
yeah for marc jacobs polka dots!
Gorgeous skirt. Love it with the mint top in particularl, a great combination!
Oh, love this spotty version, which I may just have to rip off (err… I mean, be inspired by). This is gorgeous! I think you will solely be responsible for me buying this pattern.
P.S. Aren’t you lucky, getting to test all these patterns?
It’s true! I don’t know why these people entrust their patterns in my hands, but I’m very thankful for the opportunity š
Wow, just when I thought Tilly couldn’t get anymore amazing!! I totally need one of these skirts. Yours looks amazing. I love the navy polka dots, and I have to say, I’m rather surprised you didn’t pair it with orange in there somewhere š
WAIT FOR IT… š
Super cute skirt.
Thought there were navy tights!!! Love the mint/navy combo…..another successful outfit for you! congrats!
Ooh, this turned out cute as can be! What a great use for this fabric! I bet you’ll be wearing this allllllllllll the time!
GAH I want to shop at mood, although I would need to save about 5 Gee’s to make it there/spend..
Very cute š
You know you can always order online… š JUST SAYIN
I love it! I totally have to get this pattern, it looks so fun and easy š and I also have to wear it with my Miette cardigan! Lol. You look fab and I totally think black tights look fine.. But I guess you are more stylish than that haha š
All kinds of radness! The polka dot fabric is COOL!
It’s so cool… I love it x
Dude, bare legs? Over here it’s still freezing – really: FREEZING! š Your post always make me happy, and a bit jealous too (in a healthy, not weird way). I was wondering if I could ask you something (here it comes): when you were making the Agatha cardigan, was it a total mess of dangling little threads bc of the panels you have to do with scraps, or is there some kind of magic trick I don’t know about? I barely find any other blog posts about it other than yours.
And now I got t o get back to work, before my bossman comes back and gives me the evil eye. I hope you make lots of nice things this week, and plenty of posts about it š
The Agatha was actually knit in one piece, starting at the neck/shoulders and then working down in a tube to the bottom, then the arms were knit on (in one piece), one at a time. So the only yarn danglies happened when I ran out of yarn and had to switch to a new ball. To knit that sweater, you’d work x stitches in ribbing, then x stitches in row 1 of the lace pattern, then x stitches of ribbing. Next row is x stitches of ribbing, row 2 of lace pattern, x stitches of ribbing, etc etc. Does that make sense?
YES THANK YOU! I was doing it all wrong – silly me! I was working the entire panels -no wonder I got stuck. I can’t wait to get home and do some knitting now. Yay!
Hahaha I TOTALLY did that when I started knitting too! I think it’s a pretty common mistake for a n00b (another thing that stumped me – SSN. Didn’t realize you were supposed to knit them together, derp). I’m glad I could help, yay!
This is so cute! I love it paired with the wrap top. Miette looks like a great pattern. Now I feel a serious need for some polka dot linen in my life for the spring. I may have to check out some of the other colorways you mentioned. Hope you were serious about the twin thing. Hehe!
Oh so cute! I love the mint and navy together. Thanks for testing out and reporting on the skirt’s performance in wind!
Love this skirt, love this fabric and the combo with the mint top. No lie, you have just inspired me to go to Mood this afternoon to find that same fabric! (Mood did a great thing for their sales when they invited you to be a blogger, as you make awesome garments!!)
Dude, so love the mint to with the dots. That top fits you SO beautifully. Ya look lovely. I need to put the felting needles down and SEW!
Love the polka dots. It looks great on you š
I just discovered your blog and I’m addicted! I just finished sewing my first shirt using a pattern. You are so inspiring!
Love this! I’ve been meaning to make a couple wrap skirts (I used to have a bunch of vintage, 70s ones–but I think I got rid of all of them during one of my epic closet purges) for this spring. The print is to die for (I’m wearing one of my favorite polka dot skirts today, so I may be biased… lol.)! Going to have to add the Miette to my sewing wishlist!
i haven’t made a wrap skirt yet, but i want to try now with miette skirt!
Hi Lauren, just a quick note. I nominated you for The One Lovely Blog Award/Very Inspiring Blogger Award. My apologies if you’ve received it before, but yours is one of my very favourite blogs and I wanted to reflect that on my list. Happy Sunday. Jacq x
Just so you know…I have followed your blog because a) all your creations are beautiful, but also because b) I LOVE your sewing space and I want it as inspiration for my soon to be new house š x
Navy with black is awesome. I wear that combination all the time and cite the fabulous Angie of YouLookFab (http://youlookfab.com/2012/09/04/navy-as-the-new-neutral/) in support of that pairing.
Can totes see this with a 50s style matching midriff top!
hi! I really like the way your clothes looks! but I am more impressed with your working room/studio!!!! is that the way how is looking now? would you mind posting some pics of it? I hope you could…..thanks! looking for ideas….
I change small details pretty frequently in my sewing room, but you can get a general idea of how it’s set up via Brittany’s blog post š
