Completed: The Film Noir Coppélia

8 Jan

Okkkk, I wouldn’t normally post the exact same fucking thing almost twice in a row (only broken up by the La Sylphide On A Dude Ranch), but I feel like I owe it to this pattern to show y’all that it also totally rocks in a neutral/solid fabric. Like a gorgeous little backdrop in wooly wrapped goodness.

Film Noir Coppélia
Again, this is the Coppélia pattern – this time sewn up in a dreamy, drapey wool knit. I’m not sure exactly what this fabric is; I bought it at the giant fabric sale last week and the bolt said it was a wool blend. My burn test seemed to indicate that it was pure wool – or at least blended with something natural, as the ash was not that sticky hard horrid bead of death that you usually get when you burn polyester. At any rate, it’s warm and snuggly and soft, and the texture almost looks like gauze when you hold it up to the light. Pretty!

Film Noir Coppélia
Also, let the record show that my wool version was birthed because Katie said she was making a bunch of these in merino knits and I got jealous and decided to copy her. SORRY NOT SORRY.

Film Noir Coppélia
Can someone explain to me why it is so difficult to find wool knits in the first place, though? Especially in not-neutral colors. What I reeeeally wanted was the emerald green wool jersey I found at Textile a couple of months ago (and not because emerald is the new ~color of the year~, but more so because I look bomb ass in emerald, trufax), but it was $30 a yard and I was holding out for the 40% sale, except it sold out at some point between those dates and now I am a sad person and SOMEONE FIND ME JEWEL COLORS OF WOOL JERSEY PLEASE AND THANK YOU.

Film Noir Coppélia
Black is good, though. I feel like such a lady.

Film Noir Coppélia
At least black goes with everything… including my Giant Plaid Circle Skirt. You dig?

Film Noir Coppélia
I tried to take motion pictures to show the no-gape in all it’s glory, but my hair was in the way for most of them. Here is… something.

Film Noir Coppélia
This one fits a little different than the Disco Queen version… mostly because the fabric is much stretchier. I really like it; it’s very comfortable and slouchy without actually being sloppy. Look at how much longer the ties are when they stretch!

In other COMPLETELY RANDUMB news, Andrew WK hollered at me via Twitter last night:
WHAT THE FUUUUCK omg omg omg
UMMMM WHAT THE EVERLOVING FUCK THIS IS SO AWESOME HOLY SHIT.

In celebration, I give you this gif of me being excited out of thin air:

OMG SO EXCITE

I love the pattern but I am also ridiculously excited and jealous about the Andrew WK thing, yes I am.

And the green fabric thing? I. LOVE. GREEN.

Can I find green? Can I? Can I shit… *angryface*

At least, not pretty emerald green or even teal green, no all I can find is pooey ditchwater green, olive green and heinous lime green that makes me look like I have liver failure. Ugh. I need green, it’s almost spring, I wants pretty colours (and I too look the dog’s bollocks in green 😀 )

This looks just as great as the other! Much classier in black, I agree. I have an ivy merino jersey that has been sitting in my stash since a fabric.com sale a year ago. This is it. I need to get this pattern!

SO EXCITING INDEED!! That’s awesome that you got such a fab shoutout on Twitter, and it’s even more awesome that you are rocking this epic plaid skirt – love it with the black – business on top, party on bottom. Well done!

I love this version. Very classy, Ladybird, very classy. I, too, have looked all over for wool jersey, and I actually found some in, wait for it, *color*, but alas not emerald green, which I would love to have. I look fantastic in gem colors as well, pastels are for anyone but me. Don’t minimize the look of neutrals on you. Bet you would look good in winter white. Anyway, her is the link for colors.

    Who loves ya baby?

OOOH you just made my day with that link! While not emerald green, that bottle green is pretty lovely in it’s own right. Thank you thank you!

Glad to be in service to the queen.

Love this on ya, girl! And Andrew WK– WHAT THE FREAK?! Hilarious! Ugh, I WANT one of these… I’m all tied up with a stupid time-consuming project! I always forget that I totally HATE long projects…

      Ooh, I love that color!

Weird question: have you ever bought this specific fabric from Fabric Mart? I’ve never had a good experience with their fabrics (I recall ordering something that claimed to be wool and getting a fabric that was clearly polyester, ugh), so I’m hesitant to order from them again.

      • colleen January 9, 2013 at 7:38 am #

I have to admit that I’ve bought tons of fabric from them, and have had maybe three really useless buys, which I should have known. I tend to buy the “designer” fabrics when they’re really discounted so have gotten some really beautiful stuff for nothing. I haven’t bought this but I have bought some other wool knit that was beautiful — in fact, I was looking for it for you because it’s a beautiful shade of dark green. But, they’re out. They are pretty nice folks and would probably take things back. So, I’d take a chance. And, you know, I bought a beautiful knit fabric from my Local for about 25.00 a yard. It was clearly marked cotton and when I decided to dye it deep red and it turned washed out salmon, I realize these mistakes happen everywhere…..Let me know if you decide to order from them and good luck!

They also have some wool jersey at Mood, but it has a bit of lycra in it. Is that a problem for this top? They have some in grass green, pretty! I was born to be a personal shopper, what can I say? LMAO

    • LLADYBIRD January 8, 2013 at 4:30 pm #

Wow, they did not have that kind of selection last time I looked. I guess they restocked 🙂 Yay, Mood!

      • Becky January 8, 2013 at 4:32 pm #

Well, it may not be a knit. I guess you are only looking for a knit with this top. OK, shutting up now.

  8. Sofie January 8, 2013 at 5:59 pm #

Ditto re colours for winter – more jewel colours (altho it is summer here!). Who is that Andrew bloke?? I miss the awesomeness of this! Please enlighten!

    • Angela January 8, 2013 at 6:19 pm #

Don’t feel bad Sofie – I had the same question! LOL!!
I’m sure someone will fill us in. 🙂

    • LLADYBIRD January 9, 2013 at 8:49 am #

Haha! Andrew WK is a singer/musician who does a lot of party music and he’s generally awesome and hilarious. His big hit album was “I Get Wet,” which was released in 2001. I’m not really sure what genre you’d throw it in, but I will say that the Nashville hardcore kids loooooooved Andrew WK. That shit was my JAM in high school!

All his songs are about parties. It’s so awesome haha.

  9. Lizzie January 8, 2013 at 8:57 pm #

I had to google to find out who this Andrew WK dude was – still not really any wiser!! Anyway loving the top, I so want a Coppelia cardigan, but getting the pattern right now is proving difficult. They don’t have it in Brisbane, so I think I am having to get it straight from NZ – phew. If only I wasn’t so impatient, and if only you didn’t keep rubbing it in my face what a great pattern this is!! 😉

  10. Heidi January 9, 2013 at 12:54 am #

Hi from Finland! I really enjoy reading your blog. It´s so inspriring!

  11. leahfranqui January 9, 2013 at 12:58 am #

This is so gorgeous. It’s official. I need this pattern. Done.

  12. Sarah January 9, 2013 at 1:01 am #

Gorgeous fabrics has some lovely wool knits as well, though mood seemed to nab the best selection. Or, you could treat yourself to a vacation to New Zealand and get some merino for yourself. Wtf not?

    • LLADYBIRD January 9, 2013 at 8:51 am #

OH MY GOD if I could get to NZ for the merino…

      • missjoiedevivre January 12, 2013 at 4:22 pm #

You ever come to NZ you’ll need to organise a conference so us meet-up starved enthusiasts can all come and shriek and faint and throw our (home-made) underwear at you.

        • LLADYBIRD January 15, 2013 at 9:01 am #

I gotta say, I don’t know if I can pass up an opportunity to feel like Elvis… 😉

      • Vanessa January 14, 2013 at 7:59 pm #

I didn’t realise merino was difficult to get – its EVERYWHERE here in NZ. Global Fabrics always has an awesome selection http://www.globalfabrics.co.nz/our-fabrics

  13. Scruffybadger January 9, 2013 at 1:04 am #

Ok, so more and more jealous….this would be the perfect wardrobe basic for RIGHT NOW!! And I have some black wool mix jersey ( prob not enough but hey ho) you are really showing this pattern off to the max. And I’m holding out for pavlova….

  14. symondezyn January 9, 2013 at 1:57 pm #

I want this!!!!! I can barely find knits at all here, let alone WOOL knits – let alone a variety of colours… although to be honest, I’d probably go for black anyway LOL. Love this… it’s absolutely GORGEOUS!!

  15. Katie January 10, 2013 at 2:55 am #

I’m absolutely loving your versions of my patterns! I never realized it was hard to source wool knits over your way? Here in NZ you can get Merino knit everywhere…it is such an amazing fabric, warm in the winter, cool in the summer and you can just throw it in the washing machine with everything else..no shrinkage! I’ve been thinking about selling a selection of colors by the meter on my website, would this be something anyone would be interested in?? Katie (Papercut Patterns) 🙂

    • LLADYBIRD January 10, 2013 at 8:59 am #

Yay! I’m so glad you like them! I have more plans, too 🙂 Thank you so much for letting me get my hands on these lovely patterns 🙂

And yeah, wool knits are hard to get over here! Not sure why (I mean, this is America, after all HAHA), but it’s really lame. I would totally be interested in buying merino knits from you, especially since I could combine them with pattern purchases to make the shipping hurt less. If you can get brighter colors that don’t fall in the pastel range, I think that would definitely be a hit. All I see here (if anything) is stuff like white, lilac and pastel pink. BORING.

      • Sarah January 10, 2013 at 10:02 am #

I would buy them too, if you offered them on your site. And if another pattern found its way in there, well, oops!

        • kristonlion January 10, 2013 at 11:21 am #

Me too! I want merino knit so bad! I’m almost always cold!

  16. Fiona January 10, 2013 at 3:34 am #

I just hit ‘add to cart’ on the Coppelia cardi pattern…what are you doing to me?!!!

    • LLADYBIRD January 10, 2013 at 9:00 am #

… making your life better 😉 SO MUCH BETTER

  17. Carlee January 10, 2013 at 7:56 am #

Hahahaha Andrew WK, that’s frickin awesome. Both Coppelia’s look fab!

  18. Tasha @ By gum, by golly! January 11, 2013 at 8:31 am #

I love the black and sassy Coppelia! The fabric sounds yummy too. I’d love to find a good solid-but-not-ugly wool knit for a Tiramisu, I haven’t found anything so I haven’t even started it yet. Boo.

  19. sallie January 12, 2013 at 8:59 am #

Dude, black is always so freaking lady-like! I love LOVE this top in a solid black, you look like a ballerina! A secret yearning of mine that I had to give up on when I developed line-backer-shoulders (wtf?!) But you! YOU! Look elegant as fuck.
Also, it’s been a while since I checked but I thought Mood had some wool knits around? I don’t know if they were all in a barfy shade of beige or not, though…? I kinda remember some “garnet” hues…. but no emeralds…

  20. kimmie January 12, 2013 at 1:24 pm #

your gif is amaze-balls. That is all.

  21. missjoiedevivre January 12, 2013 at 4:25 pm #

This is fantastically beautiful. We do have a great range of merino knit fabrics here but I have to say that I’ve found the cost of the quality merino puts me off quite a bit! I may need to look further afield when winter rolls around. This look has certainly convinced me that knit tops can be warm and stylish and given me some ideas, but it’s too hot right now to contemplate sewing merino!

    • Vinnie January 13, 2013 at 12:26 pm #

Definitely check out the selection at Mood – I bought the most gorgeous veridian green and true magenta a while back. Don’t remember the price but it was def. reasonable.

  22. Becca January 14, 2013 at 12:58 pm #

Love it! The fit is so flattering, and the fabric looks soft. It looks snuggly and fashionable at the same time. The pattern seems like a hit.

  23. Rebecca January 17, 2013 at 11:16 am #

    WHAT THE …

ANDREW WK GAVE YOU A SHOUT-OUT?

ALL CAPITAL LETTERS JESUS I LOVE YOUR BLOG BUT NOW IT’S JUST GONE OVER THE TOP CAN I BE YOU WHEN I GROW UP OK THANKS.

  24. Sarah January 19, 2013 at 7:59 pm #

Can you share how you did the hem and tie facing part? I’m in the middle of mine, and super confused. Also, mine turned out too baggy where the raglan sleeve meets the bodice- any suggestions from the papercut master pattern sewist? Ok, that’s totally not a real title, but I thought some flattery might get me some help.

    • LLADYBIRD January 21, 2013 at 10:38 am #

Hmmmm let me think; I don’t have my pattern with me right now so I’m trying to remember how the directions go. I believe you sew the tie facing to the inside of the top, right side out, yes? It took me a minute to wrap my head around it, just pay really close attention to the picture and the indications of right/wrong side of the fabric. Anyway, you just sew the part that connects to the top (leaving the long tie ends free), then fold the long tie ends right sides together and sew those, then turn out to the right side. THEN you’ll flip the rest of the tie band to the right side (on the outside of the top) and fold the seam allowance down and topstitch on the right side. That should enclose everything. If this still sounds confusing (and it probably does, aha), send me an email and I’ll try to take a picture or something!

For the bagginess, that happens with knits, since they’re all various stretchiness. I’d just put it on inside out, pin out the excess, and then sew where I pinned 🙂 Probably not the ~proper~ way to do it, but hey it works!

I really like this outfit, I can’t stop to think about your skirt… That’s so lovely and feminine ! Bravo 🙂
In France too, wool knits and jersey in “normal” colors and designs are so hard to find…
Kiss from France and happy 2014 !
